Prof. Dr. Stefan Mühlebach

From the University of Bern Stefan Mühlebach got his pharmacy diploma in 1975 and obtained a PhD in pharmacology and toxicology in 1979 (faculty award) being a research fellow at the Department of Pharmacology. In 1993 he was promoted "university teacher (habilitation at the Medical Faculty) with his Swiss National Science foundation-supported work on "Persistent environmental xenobiotics as model compounds in pharmacokinetics".
In 2000 he got his venia docendi at the Medical Faculty of the University of Basel joining the group of Prof. Krähenbühl at the Dept. of Pharmaceutical Sciences. In 2004 he was appointed Professor of Pharmacology and Hospital Pharmacy). In 2005 he spent a sabbatical in Boston at Harvard Medical School (clinical nutrition). His main scientific interests are in applied pharmacology and in clinical nutrition related to hospital pharmacy. Since 2009 he is a committee member of the Swiss Academy of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Fellow of the Swiss Society of Pharmaceutical Sciences.
As hospital pharmacy he started at the Regional Hospital of Biel in 1980. He was appointed Chief Pharmacist at the Kantonsspital Aarau in 1987 served as chairman of the hospital's Drugs and Therapeutics Committee and created a clinical nutrition board in '89. As Head of the Central Medical Services' Department he was a member of the hospital board. He established the first accredited postgraduate training in hospital pharmacy in Switzerland and was responsible in creating a first IV admixture service for parenteral nutrition and cytotoxics for in- and out-patients in the 90ties. From 2005-2007 he became full-time Head of the Pharmacopoeia at Swissmedic, President of the Pharmacopoeia Commission and Head of the Swiss delegation of the European Pharmacopoeia Commission at the Council of Europe in Strasbourg. He was a consultant in clinical nutrition and hospital pharmacy at the University Hospital Bern 2005-2007. In 2008 he joined Vifor Pharma Ltd as Chief Scientific Officer and VP. Since Oct 1st 2009 he is a Senior Counselor in the Global Regulatory Affairs at Glattbrugg (Switzerland).
