Kamaleddin Tehrani (Kamal) is a postdoctoral researcher who joined the University of Basel in 2025. He earned his PhD from Leiden University in the Netherlands in 2021. During his doctoral research, he contributed to the development of novel semi-synthetic vancomycin analogs with potent activity against drug-resistant clinical isolates of Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and Enterococcus species (VRE). He was also involved in synthesizing prodrug inhibitors of metallo-β-lactamases—enzymes responsible for the degradation of β-lactam antibiotics.
In 2021, Kamal moved to the Helmholtz Institute for Pharmaceutical Research Saarland (HIPS), supported by an Alexander von Humboldt (AvH) fellowship. There, he focused on the production of novel natural products derived from Myxobacteria, employing a combined strategy of gene cluster engineering and precursor-directed biosynthesis. His work led to the production and purification of new cyclic octapeptides belonging to the argyrin class of natural products.
Currently, Kamal is involved in the production and bioactivity evaluation of Streptomyces metabolites produced via polyketide synthases.
