Dr. Pascal Detampel studied pharmacy at the University of Basel and subsequently held several leading positions in a pharmaceutical company. He then obtained his Ph.D. in the group of Prof. Dr. Jörg Huwyler in 2012, where he developed liver-specific liposomes targeting the asialoglycoprotein receptor (ASGPR). From 2013 to 2015, he pursued postdoctoral research with the group of Prof. Dr. Matthias Amrein and at the imaging facility of the University of Calgary, Canada. His research focused on the application of advanced imaging modalities, including the development of novel intravital imaging techniques, to investigate the fate and biodistribution of nanoparticles in the lung.
In 2016, he returned to the Huwyler group at the University of Basel, where his research included therapeutic protein stability in formulations, polymer-based drug delivery systems, and the development of extracellular vesicles (EVs) and lipid nanoparticles (LNPs) for gene therapy applications in liver diseases. In parallel, he developed imaging approaches to visualize and quantify the distribution of nanoparticles in zebrafish larvae.
Since 2024, Pascal Detampel has been leading the Drug Targeting section of the Pharmaceutical Technology group, supporting research activities and supervising team members.
His main research interests focus on the development of nanoparticle-based drug delivery systems and on visualizing and quantifying their cellular interactions, biodistribution, and fate in vivo, with a particular emphasis on LNPs and intravital imaging.
