Following the Biopharmacy group's participation in the 16th European ISSX Meeting in Basel (June 29 - July 02, 2026), we are pleased to share a highlight from the event: Dr. Marta Rysz's abstract entitled: "Are Tomatidine Metabolites Clinically Applicable as Activity Markers for Cytochrome P450 Enzymes?" was selected for a rapid-fire three-minute presentation and was subsequently awarded Third Place for Best Presentation in the post-doctoral group, a recognition of the quality and relevance of the underlying research.

In her ISSX presentation, Dr. Marta Rysz reported primarily on data generated in collaboration with Pascal Odermatt during his MSc thesis project, which she supervised within the Biopharmacy Group. This work focused on the in vitro metabolism of tomatidine, including studies using human liver microsomes (HLMs) and recombinant CYP enzymes expressed in bactosomes, which suggest that tomatidine is primarily metabolized by CYP3A4. Furthermore, she showed that preliminary measurement in clinical samples indicate that tomatidine and its metabolites can be detected in human samples. The presented findings are part of a collaborative effort within the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, bringing together complementary expertise from Biopharmacy, Computational Pharmacy, and Pharmaceutical Biology.

This award represents an important recognition for the entire group, which aims to advance the understanding of molecular mechanisms underlying interindividual differences in drug disposition and efficacy, and to translate this knowledge into clinically applicable approaches for individualized pharmacotherapy through DMPK-based strategies.
