Regulatory Toxicology

The Regulatory Toxicology group in the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of Basel is also an integral part of the Swiss Centre for Applied Human Toxicology – SCAHT. The SCAHT was established in 2009 and achieved foundation status in 2014. It is supported by the Swiss Confederation and the Universities of Basel, Geneva and Lausanne.

The Regulatory Toxicology group provides advice to and carries out regulatory science projects for risk assessors, risk managers, and policy makers on human health risks from chemical and pharmaceutical substances. In addition, the group provides a vital link between researchers and regulators, helping to translate complex research findings into practical recommendations, measures and policies covering risk assessment, risk management, and risk communication.

In close collaboration with regulatory authorities, members of the Regulatory Toxicology group represent Swiss toxicology in national and international scientific expert groups such as the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), the European Food and Safety Authority (EFSA) and the World Health Organization (WHO).

The group conducts research in the fields of evidence-based toxicology, development of pathway-based approaches and improving principles and practice of human health risks related to environmental chemical exposures.
